In One Sentence – What do you Do?

Someone recently asked me what I did. I listed a lot of things—I’m sure you have a similar list.
I’m a homeschool mom who helps our daughters learn. I pick up nursing shifts to help out at our church’s nursing home (which also helps our family meet financial goals). I also help with technology and website design for our homeschool group. I have helped a couple of authors publish their books. Ekkkkk! Right now, I’m helping a friend manage her launch team for her brand-new book. I love helping moms through the words I write. I love love love to help leaders lead.
The business coach who asked me this question said that if I could whittle this list down into one sentence, I may find clarity.
I thought about it for several days. Who am I? How do I whittle that random list down into one short sentence?
There was a word that preceded everything I listed. Did you catch it? I finally realized, this word describes my whole life — I am a helper. At each stage of life, I have found myself helping someone. I am a helper, and my favorite person to help is the person I used to be.
The person I used to be was a homeschool mama, surviving moment by moment.
The person I used to be was angry and unforgiving towards someone in my past.
The person I used to be didn’t have a Bible study routine that worked.
The person I used to be didn’t know she had permission to take care of herself.
The person I used to be helped and helped, until she realized it was lonely to serve without support.
The person I used to be chased an endorphin high from social media comments, likes, or shares.
The person I used to be longed to be someone important.
The person I used to be was so afraid of rejection that she made it appear everywhere.
The person I used to be tried to be liked, but wouldn’t believe it was possible that anyone could.
The person I used to be wished someone would stop to really see her, someone would walk beside her, and remind her she was not alone.
(I wonder if my list could go on for a mile lol)
I dream of helping the person I used to be. I want to be someone who stops to really see the homeschool mom. I want to walk alongside and cheer her on. I want to remind homeschool moms that they are not alone. I like to walk alongside women, encourage and help them to do what they are called to do.
I wonder. What would your one sentence be? What do you do?
I think mine is: I help women, especially the ones who I used to be.

Played Play Nine

It was confusing to me at first, but my 4-5-year-old great nephews figured out how to play, so I figured I’d better learn. Basically, you want the least amount of points. You try to exchange your cards so they match, giving you fewer points. Exchange your high cards for low ones. And hope that the last card you turn over at the end is LOW.
It’s strategy mixed with chance. A game for all ages. And one in which you can hold other conversations while playing it.

I just love Connie. She has inspired me for many years. Every stage I see her walking through, she chooses to have so much joy and peace. I can tell it’s not always easy (she would tell you that too), but she chooses to never have a victim mentality.
This episode is a recording from our event at church. Connie shares a bit of what her life looked like at the time. Go give it a listen — you will be blessed, I always am when I’m around Connie.
