Newspaper Co-op Class Kit

Create student newspapers while learning about the parts of a newspaper, best writing practices, and design elements. This class is a fun way to get kids writing. They will enjoy customizing their topics and designs to fit their interests. While you can use a word processor, it is best to layout and design their newspapers in Canva.
Designed to be a nine-week, one hour a week class (but of course homeschool is flexible, so can be adjusted)
The teacher lesson plans is 10 pages. The student worksheet packet is 32 pages.
Description
Class Description: In this class we will look at the pieces and parts of a newspaper; local and world news, sports news, columns, interviews, comics, and commercial ads. We will learn how to gather information, ask the right questions, hold an interview, write inviting headlines, and clear articles. Through the nine-week class the students will each write, edit, and design their own newspaper.
Student Supplies: Pencil, folder with prongs, and a single subject notebook. Not mandatory, but it would best for the students have access to a laptop or tablet with word processing and access to Canva (web browser or app) either during class or at the least at home.
Teacher Supplies: a full newspaper for each student, worksheet pages printed for each student, access to Canva (and a knowledge of how to use it)
Recommended Age: 5th-9th graders
Basic Class Layout:
- Attendance Class Convo starter (5min)
- Review of last week (5 min)
- Do a Peer Review over the the content and the grammar of the article they wrote during the week. (10 minutes)
- Newspaper Lesson & Writing Lesson (10-20 minutes)
- Students do activity page (10-20 minutes)
- Assign the week’s writing — due next week (5 minutes)
- Writing time or designing/laying out their paper in Canva (until class is over)
