A Spider Lives in my shower

 There’s a spider that lives in my shower.

I should describe my shower. It’s like a small square shower. Not like a big bathtub shower. A small square walk-in shower. 

So when I say a spider lives in my shower, it’s kind of tight quarters to have both of us in there at the same time. 

I don’t like spiders. I don’t like to be close to spiders. But you know what I hate more than sharing a shower with a spider? It’s trying to kill a spider. 

I don’t like killing a spider.

Especially in the shower, when it may wash it down the drain, or it might still be hanging on tight to the drain holes. I’ve heard these things can pretend to be dead but then crawl back up the drain and live again. Whew, I need some assurance that it IS FOR SURE dead. It freaks me out to think it could come alive again and crawl back up the drain. So I dislike killing spiders, especially in the shower. 

So guess what I do instead of killing the spider? During the whole shower, I have my eye on that spider. I make sure it doesn’t get too close to me. I make sure I know where it is every minute.

It’s not a very relaxing way to live. Sharing your shower with a spider. 

But when I think about killing it, watching it every moment seems like the easier option. Easier than wondering if it will come back up the drain. 

There’s some things in real life that I think are similar to the spider in my shower. 

There are some things I tiptoe around. Things I try to keep my eye on to make sure it doesn’t get too close to me. I try to tiptoe around issues, relationship problems, certain topics of conversation…

Maybe it’s just me, but there are things that I’d rather just watch and make sure they don’t get too close than to actually deal with them. Watching it, like the spider in my shower, seems easier to deal with than bringing up the subject or talking it out. It seems easier just to keep an eye on it today. 

The other day, the spider in my shower got a little too close. In fact, it made a web that covered about a fourth of the shower, and that was just uncalled for. The spider had to go. It was just too much for it. It overstepped its boundaries, so finally I had to face it head-on and kill it. I drowned it, killed it, smashed it, picked it up with a piece of toilet paper, and put it in the toilet. 

Was it the end of the world? No. Was my shower more relaxing without having to keep an eye out for it? Yes. Did it take less time to kill the spider than it did all the minutes I spent watching it while sharing my shower with it? Yes, it did.

Would dealing with other spidery things that distract me in real life bring me a similar experience? 

Yes, probably so. 

So I gave it a try. Instead of just stewing over something, I texted someone about it. They responded back with something that opened up more issues- issues that I thought might be there, but until they mentioned it out loud, I wasn’t sure. So I responded, explaining myself. 

That spider is maybe not completely dead yet, but it’s sure better than sharing my shower with it.  

Is it hard to kill the spider in the shower? Yes, yes, it is. It is more time-consuming in the moment, yes, yes it is. 

But it’s the right thing to do. In eight-legged spiders and in real-life drama, that feels like a spider. Hit it head-on; don’t just watch it for the next 5 showers. Just squash it and move on.

I learned today that showers are much more relaxing, when there aren’t any other creatures involved.

Inkjets are so finicky. The ink is ok one day and dry the next. I used to not print much, but then by the time I went to use it again, it was dry. The answer to this?? … toner printer.

Someone recommended the Brother brand to us, and we have had one for 15-16 years. It was a workhorse. And I could have given it a good cleaning, replaced the drum again, and kept right on going. But at this point we opted to get a newer model. 

This is probably the most expensive thing I’ll ever recommend. But whew, I can’t help but recommend having a good printer. It is lovely! Very lovely. 

Especially for a homeschool mama.
