How are Your City Walls?

July 22, 2015 Leave a Comment

Do you ever get angry?  Do you ever let your raw feelings show through?
One of my girls was very angry.  Very!  I sent her to her room hoping she would cool down and be able to be reasoned with. Nope.  This time it didn’t work.  I left her in there and prayed for God to show me what to say to her.
I picked up in one of my Bible Verse Books and looked up anger, self-control.
This verse really stuck out to me.  As I pleaded God to give me words to say to her I went in and showed her this verse:
Proverbs 25:28
He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls. (KJV)
or
Like a city whose walls are broken through
is a person who lacks self-control. (NIV)
What does that verse mean to you?  Do you have self control when you are angry?  I’m in that same place of anger sometimes, like my girl was that day.
She had let anger take over her self control.

What does it say losing self control is like? Like a city with their walls broken through.  So when we let anger, hatred, wrath, anything that takes over control of our emotions, when we let those feelings take over, we are as a city with the walls torn down.

Here is an important question:
What happens to a city with their walls down?
THE ENEMY GETS IN.
Who is this enemy??
I know, I know, you all probably knew this before.  Why didn’t I think of this?
When I am angry, my ‘self-control walls’ are broken down.  When my ‘self-control walls’ are borken down SATAN, my enemy, can get right into my heart!
I’m not sure about you, but that is a scary thought!  I do NOT want to leave my heart open even one crack.  Let alone, leave all my walls down, giving him perfect access.
We need to keep ‘rule over our own spirit’ we need to have ‘self-control’.  We need to make an active effort to fight the feelings that leave us vulnerable to satan.
In teaching this verse to my girl, I learned a Little Lesson.
Join in, do you ever find your ‘self-control walls’ fallen down?  Have you ever thought of this verse like this before?

The book I used to look up verses on a specific topic …

When we lived loved... other things fade to the background. Messy houses, piles of papers to grade, dishes to do, spelling words to review, multiplication flash cards ... if we do it because we are loved instead of FOR love; the difference is transforming!
May we remember to live loved.
